What is an appraiser? An appraiser is a real estate professional who specializes in providing opinions of value (appraisals). Most appraisers are real estate appraisers, who specialize in real property. Other appraisers specialize in other types of property, such as gems or machinery and equipment. Professional appraisers have taken courses and been supervised during their training period.
In Florida a Certified General Real Estate Appraiser must pass a rigorous test having
300 hours of board-approved coursework covering real estate appraisal topics required by the Florida Real Estate Appraisal Board (FREAB). These 300 hours must include 15 hours of the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).
Provide proof of a bachelor's degree or higher, or a total of 30 hours of courses consisting of the following topics: English Composition, Micro Economics, Macro Economics, Finance, Algebra, Geometry or higher mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, and either Business Law or Real Estate Law.
Two of the following courses must also be included in your education: Accounting, Geography, Agricultural Economics, Business Management or Real Estate.
Submit a completed application, electronic fingerprinting, and $330 application fee.
Submit an RE 2300 form with documentation of 3,000 hours of real estate appraisal experience collected over a 30-month period. You must be able to supply the appraisal board with copies of appraisal reports if asked to do so. At least half of the documented experience must be in nonresidential appraisal work.
Pass the General National Exam and the Florida Supplemental Exam.
