Lake Wales is not trying to outrun Polk County’s growth machine. It is trying to catch it at the right moment.

In a county defined by logistics hubs and interstate access, the city of roughly 18,000 is betting on something less obvious and potentially more durable. After six years of groundwork, civic leaders and business operators say Lake Wales has reached a point where planning, land use and incentives are converging into a more entrepreneurial push to reshape its downtown and long-term economic base.
