Hotly contested apartment tower gets first nod in downtown St. Pete

After hours of debate, plans for a 21-story apartment tower in downtown St. Petersburg cleared a hurdle Wednesday without having to reduce its height.

The St. Petersburg Development Review Commission voted to approve Stadler Development’s site plan for a 21-story, 370-unit tower on Fifth Avenue North, which is slated to cost $134 million. The commission deferred a vote on the site plan last September due to concerns about the building’s scale and how it fits in the surrounding area, but the developer didn’t decrease height or size in its revised renderings, citing the code allows it.
