St. Pete Winn-Dixie will convert to Aldi

A Winn-Dixie store in St. Petersburg is slated to become an Aldi as part of a larger re-bannering effort.

Aldi, a German discount grocer that acquired Southeastern Grocers' Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket banners earlier this year, filed renovation plans with the city for the Winn-Dixie at 3327 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr St. N. The permit hasn't been approved yet.

The initial renovation cost is estimated at $1.7 million, according to the application filed with the city.

Aldi and the Southeastern Grocer banners have different real estate requirements. A typical Winn-Dixie is just under 50,000 square feet; Aldi's typical footprint is around 20,000 square feet.

This store totals about 46,000 square feet and will be subdivided to 21,930 square feet, according to preliminary plans filed with the city. Other tenants will have the opportunity to fill the rest of the space in a rare bid for new junior-anchor space.

An Aldi spokesperson didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. The company plans to add 800 stores across the United States by 2028 through a combination of new openings and store conversions.

The new Aldi will be in a competitive grocery market; Trader Joe's, Publix Super Markets Inc., The Fresh Market and Whole Foods Market have stores within roughly a mile of the property. This will be the fourth Aldi in St. Pete, and the number of Winn-Dixies in St. Pete will be reduced to four.
