On Davis Islands, a historic preservation project represents the future of coastal development

The owner of a historic apartment building on Davis Islands wants to raise it more than 7 feet to mitigate flood risks — a project that could represent the future of waterfront construction in Tampa Bay.

Tampa City Council on Thursday will hold a review hearing on the plans, which require approval from the city's variance review board. The plans were approved, and Dennis Fernandez, who runs the city's Architectural Review and Historic Preservation Division, has said the project is in compliance with the historic preservation guidelines. But neighbors have objected to the approval, citing "concerns about potential precedents and structural impacts on surrounding properties," according to the development team, which is based in West Palm Beach.
