National fitness chain Life Time is nearly ready to re-open its Tampa facility after a multimillion-dollar renovation of one of the city's most closely watched properties.

Life Time, which closed its International Plaza location in 2023, said the Harbour Island club will open on Tuesday. Minnesota-based Life Time leased the 6.5-acre facility, which was previously home to the Harbour Island Athletic Club, from owner RMR Group in 2023. (Life Time's space at International Plaza is being redeveloped into Dick's House of Sport, a new concept from Dick's Sporting Goods.)

Life Time Harbour Island has a 36,000-square-foot indoor club and 150,000 square feet of outdoor space, including tennis and pickleball courts and a four-lane swimming pool. Current pricing begins at a $1,000 initiation fee and $329 per month for a single membership. A Life Time spokesperson declined to disclose the club's capacity and said it has a "10,000-person waitlist."

It is the second gym to open near downtown Tampa in recent months. Gold's Gym Gasworx opened in late June after months of delays.

“We’ve had interest in this iconic area of Tampa for a long time, and the acquisition of the former Harbour Island athletic club was a fantastic opportunity to bring our elevated Life Time experience, in a capital-light way, to this great community,” Parham Javaheri, Life Time executive vice president, president of Club Operations, and chief of property development said in a statement. “We’re excited for our team to serve our new members with all they need to live healthy, happy lives.”

The facility offers group fitness, cycle, yoga and reformer Pilates classes. It also offers personal training, small group training and individual programs.

“Life Time’s arrival in Harbour Island promises an entirely new health and wellness experience for our entire Tampa community,” Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said in a statement. “Their investment not only creates new jobs but also infuses vibrancy into the area, reinforcing our ongoing commitment to healthy living for all ages.”
