A historic estate in St. Petersburg’s Bahama Shores neighborhood has hit the market for $1.6 million.

The home at 6230 Third St. S was built in 1924. It was designed by architect Edgar Ferdon, who came to St. Pete in 1892 and is behind the Crislip Arcade on Central Avenue and the First Congregational Church on Fourth Street North. Robert W. Lyons, who once owned the development that later would be named Bahama Shores, once called the property home.

Kent Rodahaver with NextHome South Pointe is the listing agent for the estate.

The estate has five bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms and was the first of two homes built in Alta Marina, which later became Bahama Shores. The 4,317-square-foot home sits on a 0.75-acre lot. The asking price is approximately $371 per square foot.

Many historic elements of the home have been preserved while more modern efficiencies were incorporated into the structure. The copper gutters and downspouts have been dismantled and restored. The entryway has green river slate flooring, the kitchen has custom mahogany cabinets with cast nickel hardware and the living room has a fireplace.

The property has an artisan well that feeds the 55,000-gallon swimming pool. There is also a shaded courtyard, an orchid greenhouse and 25 varieties of palms throughout the gardens.

Rodahaver told the Tampa Bay Business Journal the home has been “painstakingly maintained to preserve its original character and features.” It will be 100 years old this year. There was an extensive renovation in 1948 when Lyons purchased the home and the kitchen was renovated in 2005. The plumbing, electrical and HVAC have all been updated as well.
