Speer YMCA and Mangrove Bay Middle School project clears development hurdle

The Speer YMCA and Mangrove Bay Middle School project has cleared one of the final hurdles in its development after the city council approved the final replat of the site.

The roughly 19-acre property consisted of 16 platted lots and portions of rights-of-way and, during the council meeting on Nov. 2, was consolidated into one lot.

The site will be home to the Speer YMCA, a new 75,000-square-foot facility, which is located at 495 62nd Ave. NE. The facility is part of a 111,757-square-foot project that is comprised of the Mangrove Bay Middle School, 501 62nd Ave. NE, and the Speer YMCA.

There will be shared amenities between the two projects, including a gymnasium, dining hall, culinary center and athletics field.

The YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg modified some of the entrances to the property following concerns regarding traffic impacts on the surrounding neighborhoods. The group broke ground on the wellness facility in June 2022, and it will include a group exercise studio, a fitness center, an outdoor wellness terrace and an aquatics center.

The Speer YMCA is anticipated to open in December, with the middle school opening for fall 2024.

The project is a unique partnership between the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg and the Pinellas County School District. It will offer after-school care for middle school students and provide health and wellness programs for adults, seniors and families.

The YMCA raised $20 million for the project before launching its funding campaign’s community phase in September. In October, it raised an additional $3 million for the Speer YMCA through donations from the Hough Family Foundation and Jim and Heather Gills.

The facility’s opening is expected to create more than 100 full-and-part-time jobs.

The project development team includes St. Petersburg-based architecture firms Harvard Jolly and Wannemacher Jensen and Clearwater-based Creative Contractors.
