Luxury townhouses to break ground near Ybor City's Gas Worx

Luxury townhouses near Ybor City's forthcoming Gas Worx district will begin construction this week.

Canvas GWX, a 79-unit townhouse development at 1218 E. Kay St., will celebrate its groundbreaking on Friday. Tampa-based Sight Real Estate is the developer in a joint venture partnership with Shepard Capital Partners. Ellison Construction is the general contractor, and Curts Gaines Hall Jones Architects designed the project.

"Even without Gas Worx being built, it's a great location," Michael Mincberg, Sight founder, previously told the Tampa Bay Business Journal. "It's not very walkable yet, but it will be once Gas Worx is there."

The homes range from 2,100 to 2,400 square feet, and prices start at $735,000. Nineteen units are under contract, according to a news release Sight and Ellison issued Thursday.

While the townhouses are just outside the boundaries of Gas Worx, Gas Worx developers Darryl Shaw and Kettler are not involved in the project.

Mincberg has carved out a niche in Tampa's residential real estate market by building luxury townhouses. Mincberg is also behind Shore House, which is off of Gandy Boulevard. He also planned to redevelop the former Kojak's House of Ribs on Gandy Boulevard into townhouses but ultimately sold that property to Oxford Commons, the parent company of Tampa's Oxford Exchange.
