$251 million AdventHealth Riverview hospital tops out

AdventHealth's new Riverview hospital has reached a critical construction milestone: It's topped out, meaning the hospital has reached its full height of four stories.

The hospital, which will initially have 80 beds and room to expand to 200, was originally slated to open in spring 2023. But supply chain issues that affected concrete, rebar, electrical panels, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems forced the health system to pause the project and redesign some facets of the hospital.

Project costs have increased to $251 million, up from a projected $220 million in early 2021. Robins & Morton is the general contractor. Altamonte Springs-based AdventHealth paid $3.95 million for just over 22 acres in mid-2020 — a site at U.S. 301 and Rivercrest Drive in the middle of a dense suburban corridor, surrounded by both residential and commercial development.

The hospital is 300,000 square feet; an adjacent 100,000-square-foot medical office complex is also under construction and will open in June 2024, AdventHealth Riverview CEO Jason Newmyer told the Tampa Bay Business Journal.

That's when patients will be able to receive care on the new campus, Newmyer said, as it will house doctors' offices as well as AdventHealth administrative offices.

He said patients who have visited AdventHealth's flagship hospital in Wesley Chapel will notice similarities in the facilities' layouts and aesthetics.

"We did that very intentionally," Newmyer said.

The hospital will offer emergency, cardiology, obstetrics, gynecology, labor and delivery, orthopedic and urology services. Newmyer said the facility is gaining momentum with medical staff and doctors in the area who want to take advantage of AdventHealth's technology and subscribe to the health system's "whole person" model of care.
