TAMPA - A new condo tower planned for downtown could be among the city's tallest buildings.

Tampa Condo II would bring 472 units and 15,000 square feet of retail to Washington and Morgan streets.

If granted final approval and built as proposed, the 630-foot tower would be 51 stories and include 895 parking spaces. The height would rival the 52-story Trump Tower Tampa under construction.

City council members voted Thursday to give preliminary approval to the proposal.

Final approval is expected in two weeks.

Condos will range in price from $300,000 for a 711-square-foot unit to $2 million for a 4,000-square-foot unit.

Amon Investments, the Daytona Beach developer, sees the project's proximity to Marion Street as a selling point. Marion Street is a main thoroughfare for mass transit. Developers expect many of the condo's residents to work and live downtown, opting for mass transit and walking rather than driving.

Space also has been set aside for public art or fountains.

The project would replace a surface parking lot.

Land-use consultant David Smith, who is working on the project, dazzled the council with a brief video that showed the condo rising from the ground and its position in context with other downtown buildings.

Developers now will work on design, permitting, marketing and sales. Residents likely won't be able to move in for four years.
