Country clubs are riding a wave of growth. But many are overlooking a governance risk.

Nonprofit country clubs might be leaving themselves vulnerable to governance risks, as a number of organizations appear to have been operating without policies in place that could minimize potential exposure.

According to an analysis by The Business Journals of thousands of Form 990 financial documents filed by nonprofit country clubs with the Internal Revenue Service in 2023, just 52% of those clubs said they had a conflict-of-interest policy in place, while just 39% said they had a whistleblower policy. Fewer than half (46%) said they had a document-retention policy.
