Attempt to stop 21-story tower in downtown St. Pete narrowly fails

An attempt to appeal approval of a site plan for a 21-story tower in downtown St. Petersburg failed Thursday evening, even after hours of debate and public disapproval of the project.

In January, the St. Petersburg Development Review Commission voted to approve Stadler Development’s site plan for the 370-unit tower on Fifth Avenue North called The Pelican, which is slated to cost $134 million. The commission deferred a vote on the site plan last September due to concerns about the building’s scale and how it fits in the surrounding area, but the developer didn’t decrease height or size in its revised renderings, citing that the code allows it.
