St. Petersburg wants to find out if a convention center would be viable in its downtown.

Elected officials and local groups have long championed a need for more meeting space and hotel rooms in St. Pete. After the Tampa Bay Rays walked away from redeveloping the 86-acre site home to Tropicana Field, the city has contemplated what to put on the site, and last summer, city officials announced that St. Pete would partner with Pinellas County on a feasibility study for a potential convention center on the Historic Gas Plant District.
