Former lumber yard site on Pinellas Trail moves toward redevelopment

An affordable housing project along the Pinellas Trail in St. Petersburg can now break ground, nearly four years after plans for the project were pitched.

The project on the Tibbetts Lumber Co. site north of Gibbs High School was first proposed and approved in April 2022 and touted as the first project to take advantage of a new policy allowing residential units to be built on sites not zoned for housing. Now, the city of St. Pete has approved a sitework permit for the development dubbed the Fairfield Avenue Apartments. The project will bring 264 units to the older lumber yard at 3300 Fairfield Ave. S.
