Inside BayCare's real estate buying spree in Tampa Bay

BayCare Health System Inc. has made some head-turning real estate purchases recently.

In early February, the Clearwater-based health system paid $145 million for a 36-acre office campus adjacent to St. Joseph’s, St. Joseph’s Children’s and St. Joseph’s Women’s hospitals in West Tampa. A few weeks later, BayCare paid $9 million to assemble a combined 1.58 acres on a busy South Tampa intersection where it wants to place a freestanding emergency department. It purchased empty Barnes and Noble stores in Carrollwood and St. Petersburg's Tyrone area for $10.5 million and $10 million, respectively. In 2024, the health system paid $12 million for land in Pasco County.
