Midtown's new office tower to celebrate groundbreaking next week

The office tower that will house the combined headquarters of Tampa Electric Co. and Peoples Gas will mark its groundbreaking next week.

Midtown East developers Bromley Cos. and Highwoods Properties Inc. plan to hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Jan. 12. The office tower is 18 stories and 430,000 square feet; Bromley and Highwoods will jointly own the 134,000 square feet on floors 10 through 15 that TECO and Peoples Gas do not occupy. The utilities closed on their space via a commercial condominium structure in December.

At 296,000 square feet, the TECO office deal is among the largest in Tampa Bay in recent memory.

Brasfield & Gorrie is the general contractor on the office tower; Barr & Barr is the general contractor on the tower's parking garage.

At completion in 2025, Midtown East will be Westshore's tallest office tower. The utilities will have a combined head count of 900 employees in the new Midtown location. Their headquarters has been on North Franklin Street in downtown Tampa for nearly 40 years.
