The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts is moving from downtown Tampa to Ybor City.

The museum's new location at 1630 E. Seventh Ave. will have over 3,000 square feet of exhibition space as well as a gift shop and space for lectures and artist talks. It is currently on the second floor of the six-story cube adjacent to Rivergate Tower in downtown Tampa.

"Our new space will not only provide great access and a new look but also allow us to offer a wider range of educational and community programming," Deidre Powell, FMoPA interim executive director, said in a statement. "We will now have an opportunity to serve a greater number of people in our state-of-the-art home."

The Ybor space is owned by developer Darryl Shaw, one of Ybor's largest property owners and a partner in the forthcoming Gas Worx district. Shaw has said he wants Gas Worx to include the arts, and the photography museum's relocation is the first hint at what's to come.

"Cultivating a vibrant arts community in Ybor City and within Gas Worx is a central part of our long-term vision," Shaw said. "That means partnering with our current cultural partners and attracting new artists from around the world. We are excited to play a part in helping FMoPA find and build their forever home in Ybor."

Note: Alexis Muellner, editor-in-chief of the Tampa Bay Business Journal, is chairman of the museum's board of directors.
