Alabama-based Encompass Health Corp. plans to build a 50-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in St. Petersburg.

The company announced it would open the freestanding facility near Tyrone Boulevard N and Ninth Avenue N. The exact address was not disclosed.

"We are excited to expand and grow our rehabilitation services on Florida's gulf coast," Lori Bedard, president of Encompass Health's Southeast region, said in a release. "This new hospital will allow even more residents to receive specialized care close to home. We are greatly appreciative for the opportunity to serve as the region's trusted choice for rehabilitation."

More health care companies are expanding into Pinellas County, including Tampa General Hospital, which recently opened a diagnostic center in St. Pete.

The Encompass hospital will have 24-hour nursing care and physical, occupational and speech therapies. According to the release, the facility will "serve patients recovering from debilitating illness and injuries, including strokes and other neurological disorders, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions."

The new hospital will have a therapy gym, daily living suite, private patient rooms, a pharmacy, a cafeteria and a therapy courtyard.

Encompass has 19 inpatient rehabilitation hospitals in Florida and intends to open six more in the state in the next few years. The company has 153 hospitals in 36 states and Puerto Rico.
