The Straz Center for Performing Arts in Tampa has announced a $1 million grant from Bank of America in support of its $80 million expansion master plan.

According to the release, the plan is designed to make the Straz “an even more vibrant stage for world-class arts, education and community engagement.”

The new design will provide community access and create anew gathering place and vibrant cultural destination on Tampa’s Riverwalk to take advantage of the center’s location, the Straz said.

“Artistic and cultural centers are the beating heart of a thriving community, pumping energy, innovation and beauty into the routine of daily life,” said Bill Goede, president, Bank of America Tampa Bay, in a release.

The Tampa Bay Business Journal reported in October that the Tampa City Council, acting as the downtown Community Redevelopment Agency, approved $25 million in CRA funds for the Straz redevelopment. Hillsborough County pledged $2.5 million.

“Cultural centers in our neighborhood have helped to fuel an economic resurgence and improve the quality of life for Tampa Bay residents with new and inspiring experiences. With the bank’s financial support, we are committed to preserving a state-of-the-art experience for future generations,” said Goede.

This donation marks a longtime partnership between the two organizations. In Tampa Bay, the bank supports local initiatives and organizations that create jobs, complement social curricula, and illuminate the diverse cultural traditions in the community.

“We are grateful for Bank of America’s generosity and partnership ensuring The Straz will meet the needs of a burgeoning audience and remain the destination for the best in entertainment from Broadway and beyond,” said Straz Center President and CEO Judy Lisi.

The Bank of America ranks second among banks in Hillsborough County according to the latest report on Hillsborough County market share by the FDIC. The bank had $1.84 billion deposits outside the market and $7.30 million inside the market.
