Amazon buys land near MacDill Air Force Base for new delivery station

Amazon.com has closed on a piece of land near MacDill Air Force base, where city documents show an Atlanta developer plans to build a delivery station.

The Seattle-based e-commerce giant paid $9.5 million for 25.5 acres at 6604 S. Dale Mabry Highway, according to Hillsborough County property records. The seller was Jacksonville-based Florida Rock and Tank Lines.

Seefried Industrial Properties of Atlanta, which has built facilities for Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) across the U.S., filed plans for a 123,769-square-foot delivery station earlier this year. The Tampa Bay Business Journal first reported that Amazon was the company behind the deal in mid-September.

Delivery stations are Amazon's terms for its last-mile fulfillment facilities, or the last stop a product makes before it is delivered to a customer's doorstep. The company is aggressively expanding throughout Florida and in Tampa Bay, where it's also ramping up efforts to get products to consumers within hours.

Amazon's expansion plans in the Sunshine State accelerated during the Covid-19 pandemic, which sent online shopping sales skyrocketing. That expansion includes a $100 million-plus air cargo hub at Lakeland Linder International Airport.
