Developer Darryl Shaw’s biggest real estate ambitions yet should take shape in 2021.

Shaw, whose full-time job is chief executive of Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners, is scheduled to close on a major property early in the year: Tampa Park Apartments, a public housing site that developers and business and civic leaders have eyed for years as a redevelopment play.

Shaw’s real estate holdings — he’s one of the largest landowners in Ybor City — have kept him in the headlines for years. But buying Tampa Park Apartments elevates his portfolio and plans to a new level. Shaw plans to combine the property with the 6.76-acre Gas Worx site, which is across Nuccio Parkway from the apartments as well as the adjacent, nearly 14-acre site that was once Hillsborough County’s pick for a new Rays stadium.

We don’t expect to see cranes on the property in 2021. But we do expect Shaw to make big moves in the next year, from investing heavily in the master planning process to potentially finalizing deals with development partners and rail operator Brightline for a multimodal transit station on one of his Ybor properties.
