Tampa among markets with the most people working from home

Tampa residents work from home more than those in almost any other city, a recent report found.

The report from MoneyPenny, an outsourced communications provider, identified the cities with the highest percentage of its population working from home based on U.S. Census Bureau data. To compile the rankings, the site looked at the 150 largest cities in the U.S. and ranked them based on the total percentage of their population that worked remotely.

Tampa cracked the top 10 landing at the No. 9 spot. According to the report, 7.3 percent of all employees work remotely. In comparison, Raleigh, North Carolina, the top city, had 9.1 percent work from home. Florida had five cities among those with the most remote workers. Besides Tampa, Port St. Lucie, Jacksonville, Cape Coral and Miami made the list. California was the only state to have more cities on the list with seven.

Remote working is a trend that has picked up steam over the last few years. A Gallup poll from 2017 found that almost half, 43 percent, of Americans had worked remotely in some capacity. That percentage is significantly up from 2012 when only 4 percent said they worked remotely.

Tampa ranked as the fifth best city to work from home in an unrelated study by MagnifyMoney last month. Tampa Bay Business Journal looked at various local companies’ work from home policies in November 2019.
