The future home of WeWork in downtown Tampa is officially under construction.

WeWork, a New York City-based coworking concept, will occupy 50,000 square feet in Heights Union Creative Office Center in The Heights, the mixed-use development anchored by Armature Works.

The first phase of Heights Union, a 150,000-square-foot office building, broke ground on Wednesday, SoHo Capital said on social media. The total project is 300,000 square feet.

SoHo Capital, the master developer of The Heights, is partnered with Atlanta-based TPA Group on the office portion of the district. TPA paid $8.8 million for the land, 2.58 acres on the block of The Heights that's south of West Palm Avenue, north of West Oak Avenue and between North Highland Avenue and North Tampa Street, in late January.

TPA Group also secured a $60.8 million construction loan from Pinnacle Bank for the project.

DPR Construction is the builder on the project. City building permits peg costs for site and foundation work at $19.5 million.

In addition to WeWork, AxoGen Inc., a medical technology company, has signed a lease for 75,000 square feet in Heights Union.
