Midtown Tampa developers to knock down 5-story office building

The developer of Midtown Tampa will demolish a five-story office building on the site to make way for the eventual groundbreaking of the $500 million, mixed-use development.

Bromley Cos., based in New York, is planning to demolish the building at 3725 W Grace St. at 10 a.m. on June 24. The building will be brought down in 30 seconds, the company said, by two Komatsu-brand excavators with 200-foot cables.

The 12,000 tons of concrete left behind by the building will be crushed and repurposed within Midtown. Barr and Barr is the general contractor on Midtown; Cross Environmental Services is handling interior and exterior demolition.

Midtown, at the intersection of Interstate 275 and North Dale Mabry Highway, is 22 acres and slated to include 1.8 million square feet at full buildout. Bromley has owned the majority of the land for almost 20 years; in May, it acquired a key acre for $10.5 million.

Crescent Communities will develop apartments in Midtown; Whole Foods Market Inc. has confirmed that it will relocate its store in nearby Walters Crossing to Midtown.

Whole Foods is the only confirmed tenant within Midtown, but outdoor giant REI, boutique fitness studios and restaurants appear to be among the types of tenants Bromley is targeting.
