Crunch Fitness opens in Channel district

Crunch Fitness has opened the first phase of its new location in downtown Tampa.

The gym has taken over the former Powerhouse Gym space in the Channel district, in Grand Central at Kennedy.

Originally, Crunch planned to open a 13,000-square-foot express center in September and was aiming to have all of its programming and equipment fully functional by the end of 2017.

But with a high volume of presold memberships, the gym expanded the first phase to nearly 20,000 square feet - almost the entirety of its space, said Ken Stoltenberg, principal with Mercury Advisors in Tampa.

The opening of Crunch reactivates a prime retail block in downtown Tampa. It also offers another amenity - a full-service gym - for downtown office workers and residents.

Mercury Advisors was the original developer of Grand Central at Kennedy and still owns the retail space there. Powerhouse closed its location in Grand Central in February.

At full buildout, Crunch will offer group fitness classes, a designated cardio and strength training area, a functional training area, HydroMassage beds, tanning and a private stretching area.
