UT snaps up more land for expansion

The University of Tampa has purchased land immediately west of campus for future expansion.

UT paid $5 million to assemble seven parcels that total 2 acres between North Willow Avenue and the railroad tracks, according to a Hillsborough County deed filed Thursday.

"The properties were acquired for future opportunities," at UT spokesman wrote in an email Friday. "There are no immediate development plans, and the properties are still under lease and controlled by tenants."

The site includes several warehouses, one of which is occupied by a thrift store that benefits The Spring of Tampa Bay.

The university is in the middle of raising $150 million to build a new fitness center, which is already under construction, as well as new buildings for graduate, health studies, science and technology programs.
