Marriott International Inc. (NASDAQ: MAR) will acquire Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. (NYSE: HOT) in a deal valued at roughly $12.2 billion, the companies announced Monday.

The combination of Bethesda-based Marriott and Stamford, Connecticut-based Starwood will create the world's largest hotel company. The combined company would control more than 5,500 hotels and 1.1 million rooms around the world. Marriott has 49 hotels in Tampa and 50 in St. Petersburg. Starwood has seven hotels in Tampa and one in Clearwater Beach. The local properties that will be part of the merged company, if the deal closes, are among some of the region's marquee hospitality venues:

  • Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel and Marina, 719 rooms
  • Sheraton Sandkey Resort, Clearwater Beach, 390 rooms
  • Tampa Marriott Westshore, 310 rooms
  • Westin Tampa Harbour Island, 299 rooms
  • Tampa Airport Marriott, 298 rooms
  • Sheraton Tampa Riverwalk Hotel, 277 rooms
  • Sheraton Tampa East Hotel, 266 rooms

And while not among the largest, two prominent downtown Tampa hotels are Starwood properties: Le Meridien Tampa, the restored former federal courthouse; and Aloft Tampa Downtown, which is a renovated office tower.

The deal is the biggest takeover in the hotel industry since Blackstone Group LP bought Hilton back in 2007 for $26 billion.

Starwood is known for a number of its brands, including Sheraton, Westin, W and St. Regis.

"The driving force behind this transaction is growth. This is an opportunity to create value by combining the distribution and strengths of Marriott and Starwood, enhancing our competitiveness in a quickly evolving marketplace," Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson said in a statement. "This greater scale should offer a wider choice of brands to consumers, improve economics to owners and franchisees, increase unit growth and enhance long-term value to shareholders."

The Marriott Rewards program has 54 million members while Starwood Preferred Guest has 21 million, according to USA Today.
