Tampa 'West River' redevelopment kicks off with relocation notices

Residents of North Boulevard Homes, a public housing complex in Tampa, have received notices alerting them to expect to move as early as next year.

The complex will be torn down to make way for a redevelopment project that the Tampa Housing Authority calls the creation of the "West River" area, the Tampa Bay Times said.

North Boulevard Homes was built in 1941. Along with the Mary Bethune High Rise Apartments that stand adjacent, it includes about 820 apartments housing about 2,000 people, the Times said. The first people will move out in April and the total relocation process will last about 18 months.

The West River plan includes doubling the number of units to more than 1,600 on 12 acres made available to a range of income levels, including some subsidized housing, the Times said.

Residents being moved will receive 90 days' notice, payment for moving expenses and referral assistance to find a new home. The Housing Authority will hold "Relocation 101" classes for residents, the Times said.
