Ekonomou closes on former YMCA building

Developer Nick Ekonomou has closed on the purchase of the historic YMCA building in downtown St. Petersburg at a price tag of $1.4 million.

Ekonomou, who owns NE Apartments Associates Inc. in Miami, plans to transform the building into a hotel, spa and restaurant, according to the Tampa Tribune. Previously, a local music promoter, Tom Nestor, had planned to buy the building to use it as a community center, but a Pinellas County Circuit Court judge ruled he had breached his contract and it was opened up to other buyers. Nestor has appealed the ruling.

Ekonomou, a former Florida State University football player, is renaming the 1920s structure The Edward building after his grandfather, the Tribune said.
